What does vested mean ? and how does it apply to you ?

WEll I learned the hard way what it meant!!!!
To summarize how i found out :
Well i switched companies from the States to one in France. I loved my company in the states but i found an opportunity for growth so i took it. What does all of this have to do with vesting?
Well i was looking at my 401k plan and noticed that my CAP's account was empty!
was it identity theft? what happened? well i wanted to find out cause i missing a good 5k $ .
CAP = Capital Accumulation Plan
